Interesting. I'd definitely rock this as a winter car. Little Triumph OHV and 4wd. Carefree oppo, and the inability to reach sufficient speed to be dangerous.

I wonder if that gearbox would mount up to a Dolly Sprint 16v...

Dolly Sprint AWD/4WD: now there's an interesting way to die, though less certain death than a 4wd Herald would be.

The 4wd Triumph 1300 has an interesting history. It was fairly easy to convert from FWD to 4wd since Triumph had already converted the body shell to RWD to make the cheaper Triumph Toledo. The FWD gearbox also was designed with a north south engine layout unlike most FWD cars. Finally Triumph modified a version of the transmission with an extra output for Autocars of Haifa to build a sort of 4wd utility vehicle (the Pony). Since all the basic bits were in place it was obvious that someone HAD to put it together. There are still a few of those gearboxes lying around and if I had an unlimited budget I build one immediately.

Triumph also totally missed the boat with this, not much later Subaru was making their name with FWD and 4wd sedans. A company know for sports cars, and sporty sedans like the Dolly sprint could have created a nice market with a quickish 4wd family car.
